Music in Action: Learning Through the Body and the Voice

02-02-2026

At our school, we understand music education as a living, meaningful experience that is deeply connected to the holistic development of our students.

1º ESO Choir - An Educational and Artistic Experience within the IB Framework

At our school, we understand music education as a living and meaningful experience, deeply connected to the holistic development of our students. A clear example of this philosophy was the recent 1º ESO Choir performance, which brought together students from 1º ESO A and 1º ESO B and marked the culmination of the unit of inquiry “Our Body as an Instrument: Exploring Music through the Body”, taught entirely in English as part of the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP).

The performance, held on 11 November in the school gymnasium, took place on a specially designed stage and was attended by families, whose feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Parents highlighted not only the high artistic quality of the choir, but also the excellent organisation of the event and the thoughtful choice of repertoire.

Learning Music Through Experience

Over several weeks of rehearsals and classroom work, students explored the body as a complete musical instrument, approaching music from a practical, creative and reflective perspective. The unit allowed students to develop key musical and personal skills, including:

  • The voice as a natural and expressive instrument.

  • Body percussion and rhythm through movement and coordination.

  • The connection between emotion, physical expression and music.

  • Active listening, focus and musical discipline.

  • Collaboration and teamwork within a vocal ensemble.

This approach, fully aligned with the IB learner-centred philosophy, places students at the heart of the learning process, encouraging inquiry, reflection and the real-life application of knowledge.

More Than a Performance: A Meaningful Learning Experience

The choral presentation was not only a musical performance, but also a summative assessment that enabled students to demonstrate their learning in an authentic context. Performing in front of a real audience played a key role in developing self-confidence, communication skills and emotional awareness.

Families were able to witness first-hand the progress, commitment and enthusiasm of the students, as well as the educational value of a music programme grounded in experiential learning, creativity and academic rigour.

A Commitment to High-Quality International Education

Activities such as this reflect our strong commitment to high-quality international education, in which the arts play a central role in students’ personal and academic development. The Music programme, taught entirely in English, becomes a space where students not only learn music, but also develop essential skills for their future as confident communicators and global citizens.

We will continue to design meaningful learning experiences that connect learning, emotion and excellence, empowering our students to grow as musicians, learners and members of an international community.
